Hip dips: have you got them?

Right, ladies, let’s discuss hip dips. If you’ve got no idea what I mean by hip dips, it’s the term given to the curve below your hips and above your thighs. It seems to be the body part the internet is making people feel bad about recently apparently. I know, just lovely, isn’t it?

According to Google, around 40,000 people look up the term hip dips every month. But why? It’s only to be expected that this is mostly because of social media and is being seen as one of many non-problem problems we’ve all come across before; like not having a thigh gap or lower back dimples. We’ll just add it to the neverending list of things that women are shamed for in such a toxic environment of body shaming.

If you’ve found yourself searching to find out what hip dips are or how to get rid of them, then you are most definitely not alone. Additionally, you’re also now in the right place as we’re going to tell you all about them.

But, before you go changing your whole life and workout routine, let’s look a some more into what these hip dips are, why we have them and everything in between.

What are they?

Put simply, they are an inward, natural curve below your hip and above your thigh.

But, why do we get them?

It’s due to the shape of our pelvis. So, although not everyone has visible hip dips, if we were all just a skeleton, you’d see an indentation where the hip bone meets the top of the thigh. It’s a completely normal part of our body structure, and nothing to worry about.

Are hip dips good or bad?

It is a common thought that hip dips, or a lack of them, somehow determine how healthy you are. Well, the truth is, it doesn’t! As we now know, it’s because of the shape of our bones and therefore cannot be changed.

However, your hips may look very different from someone else’s, because of the many different pelvis shapes. However, this does not make them wrong or something that needs to be fixed.

Hip dips: are they normal?

We now know that hip dips do not define how healthy or unhealthy a person is. However, they could be more noticeable if you’re someone that has a higher level of body fat or muscle mass. Whilst we all have the ability to change the way our body looks through diet and exercise, we are not able to change our bone structure.

If you find yourself scrolling through the internet and see videos and articles with the promise of ‘losing your hip dips in a week’ and so on… then keep scrolling, ladies, all they want you to do is click.

Are hip dips the same as love handles?

Why on earth we have these names for them I will never know. But anyway, no, hips dips and love handles are not the same. ‘Love handles’ are a name for the fat on the sides of our abdomen. Now, this can be linked to genetics, which has the ability to dictate the body stores fat, and is not a part of our bone structure.

Should you worry about hip dips?

Absolutely not! It can be incredibly damaging to our mental and physical health to obsess over a body part, especially one that we’re not able to change.

Is there a way to get rid of hip dips?

Ladies, it is really important that you remember that there is absolutely nothing wrong with your hip dips if you have them. We have to tell you that whatever you try, you will not be able to get rid of them. You can work out, do strength training sessions and build muscle mass as well as lose body fat to maybe reduce their appearance. But they’re bone, so they’re here to stay.

The bottom line

Well, there is basically all you need to know about hip dips. In short, we all have them, some are more prominent than others and we can’t make them disappear.

Although, we did mention something about strength training a moment ago. Workouts including exercises such as squats and lunges will strengthen your lower body and help to build muscle mass. In doing so, you may reduce the appearance of your hip dips.

It’s also important for us to note that if you can’t see your hip dips, there is nothing wrong with you either, stop worrying yourself.
